Some Atithis can be a pain in the…err…back. They come and set camp in your house, pester you with repeated demands for pakoras and paranthas, and worse still, have peculiar quirks like gargling before the crack of dawn or farting out loud without a hint of embarrassment. Chachaji (Paresh Rawal) is precisely such a guest. An old-fashioned, sixty-plus elderly from Gorakhpur village, he shows up uninvited at the doorstep of his nephew Puneet (Ajay Devgan) and his wife Munmun (Konkona Sen Sharma) in Mumbai and in no time make their home his.The couple hesitatingly extend their hospitality to the old man at first, only to regret it later when Chachaji’s presence in the house becomes a continuous headache for them. Chachaji puts up a makeshift clothesline to dry up his colourfully-striped old-fashioned kaccha and baniyan. He drives out the housemaid with his endless nagging. He slaps the building’s security guard for questioning him. He makes friends in the building and invites them over to the couple’s house for elaborate meals, which Munmun has to cook.
Coming from Ashwni Dhir, the director who made the delectable TV show ‘Office Office’, Atithi Tum Kab Jaoge? is, in similar vein, is a light-hearted entertainer that also plucks a few strings at your heart. It’s a frothy sit-com that entertains you without ever stooping down into slapstick. In the bargain, it also doles out a message of keeping our old traditions and culture alive via Chachaji whose religious devotion and homemade remedies for ailments, stand as a delightful contrast to the modern city life.
The proceedings do get a bit cluttered in the second half and certain gags become too repetitive to retain their chuckle-inducing effect, but kudos to Paresh Rawal who remains the driving force of the film till the very end. Ajay and Konkona chip in good performances.
In a nutshell, ‘Atithi’ entertaining bhava.
