It is not always that a film leaves me speechless. In fact, I don’t remember the last time that happened. ‘Ishqiya’ did just that. For sometime post the end credits I stayed quiet, trying to figure out what hit me. The final scene of ‘Ishqiya’ is a clincher. While many directors would have chosen to round up the story, Abhishek Chaubey prefers to keep it open, forcing the audience to think about the film till much after it ends. It kind of rattles your peace. But then, not every film with a slightly open end makes you feel this way. There have been examples where directors have tried keeping it so, but the films wear out too fast of your memory for you to ponder what happens later. With ‘Ishqiya’ you actually enjoy the entire journey – of two thieves and an absolutely stunning village woman.

‘Ishqiya’ is the story of two thieves – Babban (Arshad) and Iftikar (Naseeruddin) who are running away from their ganglord boss after stealing a good amount of money from him. They reach a small village in UP to get some help from a person called Verma. However, Verma is dead and his widow Krishna (Vidya) lives alone. Krishna allows them to stay at her house for a few days till they find a way out. But the boss gets to know of their hideout, reaches there and gives the two a month to return the money, else he would kill them both and also Krishna. And this is just the beginning, as one whole journey of emotions, deceit, and thrill unravels.

‘Ishqiya’ could have been an average film had it not been for the screenplay. Vishal Bhardwaj, Abhishek Chaubey and Sabrina Dhawan created a tale which takes us beyond the two thieves and the sudden female bond in their lives. The story weaves into the underbelly of caste wars in eastern UP and even gives a peak into arms smuggling. As the story moves on you start wondering who is playing who; who is the leader and who is the follower! The characters work phenomenally well. And so does every other department – right from dialogues, to background music to editing.

This film has been in news for long for the profanity of language used and of course the steamy scenes. There is nothing that an adult cannot watch though. The one intimate scene between Arshad and Vidya is done so well that it could easily qualify as one of the most sensuous scenes you have seen in Hindi cinema, without even shedding a piece of cloth!
