There is a consistent feeling of intrigue while you watch Kurbaan. Almost like a time bomb waiting to go off. Debutant director Rensil D’Silva’s ability to maintain the intense graph of Kurbaan is the biggest highlight of this film.Karan Johar is turning out to be a remarkable producer. Dostana, Wake Up Sid and now Kurbaan. All his films have been narrated in a refreshing fashion, blending unconventional themes with commercial ingredients. In that sense, Kurbaan is the least commercial of the lot. Unlike New York and Fanaa, the terrorism track and Islamic fundamentalism is not sugar coated. The characters here are cold-blooded and rarely vulnerable.Which is why Kurbaan is also not exactly a feel good watch. There are no moments of relief and the proceedings get a tad too heavy at few points. Kurbaan has a bang on first half.So we have Ehsan Khan (Saif Ali Khan), the Pakistani who lost his wife and kid to American excesses, seething with a desire to avenge his loss. He isn’t the archetypal, skull-capped, bearded fundoo, mouthing soliloquies on jihad and intifada (uprising). On the contrary, he’s suave, sophisticated and a charmer, tutoring the world on the misconceptions of Islam in the modern world.
Small wonder then he manages to win the heart of college professor Avantika (Kareena Kapoor) and follows her to New York on her stint with NYU. But the domestic idyll is short-lived as Avantika soon discovers it isn’t her neighbours (the Afghani extended family, headed by Om Puri) alone who have suspicious antecedents. Husband Ehsan too is an integral part of the plot to bomb America for its excesses against Muslims, the world over.
Kurbaan is a well executed thriller with a taut first half and a slightly slower second. Director Rensil D’Silva keeps the audience hooked with several powerful sequences like - Kareena serving coffee to Vivek - Om Puri asking Vivek to gun down the innocent man at the food counter - steamy sex scene between Saif and Kareena - when Kareena discovers her husband is a cold-blooded terrorist - the gruesome bullet which Kareena removes from Saif’s chest and the climax, which received a huge applause from the audience.Having said that, Kurbaan has several loopholes. With a cell phone available, why Kareena never calls 911 (emergency number) is never explained, how Ehsan manages to escape from the shootout, the ease with which Vivek involves him into the terror sleep cell, are one of the many cinematic liberties taken. What’s also unconvincing is a small family of around 6 people masterminding a huge attack on a nation that is yet to witness any terror post 9/11.Apart from the storyline flaws, Kurbaan as a movie works. The dialogues are good while the music is better. Saif Ali Khan is brilliant in a hard-hitting performance. Kareena Kapoor shines in the second half, didn’t like her in the first. Vivek Oberoi’s diction is perfect for an American national; he puts across a good performance. Om Puri is fine. Nice to see Kirron Kher in a non-Punjabi role.
To sum up, Kurbaan is worth the price of your ticket for the thrill it provides and for the performances and direction.
