The masala film was not an invention of the 1970s.Chalti ka naam gaadi is delightful proof of that, a raucous blend of farce, romance, and intrigue with a flavor reminiscent of the Marx Brothers.Top it off with a lead pair who sparkles together on screen and a catchy, toe-tapping SD Burman soundtrack and Chalti ka naam gaadi is the perfect entertainer that stands up brilliantly nearly 50 years after its birth. The Sharma brothers consist of former boxer, Brijmohan; Jagmohan, an Electrical Engineer; and Manmohan, a Mechanic. The brothers operate a garage under the name of ‘Mohan Brothers’.Brijmohan had been in love with wealthy Kamini, but she decided to marry someone, and since that day, a heartbroken Brijmohan hated all women and instructed his brothers not to get involved with them.Ten years later, Jagmohan and Manmohan meet and fall in love with wealthy Sheela and her friend, Renu respectively. They continue to meet on the sly so as not to incur their brother’s wrath.

Then Renu’s marriage is arranged with Prakashchand, the brother of Raja Hardayal Singh. When Manmohan meets Prakashchand he recognizes him as a killer. Before he could expose him, Renu, Manmohan, and then subsequently Renu’s dad, Kishinchand, are abducted. The motive for this abduction is to force Renu to marry Prakashchand so that Raja can inherit Kishinchand’s wealth. Before that could happen, the tables are turned, and history is re-visited when help arrives from an unexpected source.

It seems Ganguli brothers were a huge fan of Marx Brothers Movies and that’s what their source of inspiration was when they made “Chalti Ka Naam Gaadi”.But the inspiration is limited only to the idea of all three brothers acting in a musical and a comical thriller. The movie is a showcase of talents of ever talented brothers Ashok Kumar, Anup Kumar and specifically Kishore Kumar. Watch him singing melodious “Ek Ladki Bheegi Bhaagi si”, naughty “Haal Kaisa Hai Janaab Ka”, hilarious “Paanch Rupaiya Barah Aana” or mad cap “Hum The Woh Thi”.

If there ever was a true all rounder in Indian Cinema, it was the Singer, Composer, Writer, Director and Actor Kishore Kumar and arguably he is the only Genius that bollywood has ever produced.Almost 20 years now that he died of a heart attack but you can still see his style reverberating amongst the new generation of performers.
