Trikaal (1985) (Past, Present and Future) is an Indian movie written and directed by Shyam Benegal, set in Goa during the early 1960’s (pre liberation) Period. The film starred yester years actress, Leela Naidu, in a comeback role after many decades. The film was selected for the Indian Panorama at Filmotsav 1986, and for the Indian Film Retrospective, Lisbon 1986. It was later invited to the London Film Festival 1986.Set in 1961 Goa, when colonial rule of Portuguese was on its last gasp, the movie revolves around the life and tribulations of a fictional Goan Christian family called “Souza Soares”.The film shot in the ancestral home of Mario Miranda, at Loutolim, Goa.Circa 1961 Dona Maria Souzasoares lives a wealthy lifestyle in Portuguese-occupied Goa in post-independent India along with her husband, Ernesto; a daughter, Silvia, her husband, Lucio, and their two daughters Aurora and Anna. Also living in this household as a maidservant is Milagrenia, the illegitimate daughter of Ernesto, who was sired due to one of his many indiscretions with a variety of maidservants.
This does not happen, and Maria consents to the engagement, and it is on that fateful day when everyone finds out that Anna and Milagrenia are pregnant. Anna has three suitors, Erasmo, Ruiz Pereira, the paternal nephew of Dr. Pereira, and Leon Gonsalves, a freedom fighter fugitive, but it is unknown who may have been responsible for Milagrenia’s plight. Watch what impact this news has on the entire family, what they do to resolve this situation amidst the blockade by Indian troops in order to force the Portuguese to leave India..
One of Shyam Benegal’s finest work, this movie is all about a Portugal family in Goa and their struggle to come in terms with the death of the head of the family, all amidst the backdrop of an Indian army assembled to attack and take over Goa. The movie will make you experience the Goan Portuguese culture, their lifestyle, their music (watch out for the young Remo Fernandez and Alisha Chennai in 1985), and in the end, you feel as if you have actually experienced the entire happening. The costumes, the names, the behavior of the characters are all very authentic, and one thing is for sure, the next time you are in Goa, you will pause and think for a second about its unique and diverse culture and the place it holds in the Indian history.
