Sooraj Barjatya’s film Vivah is a throwback to the cinema of yore, when romantic themes were presented through stories steeped in Indian tradition and culture. In the times when filmmakers are trying bold and new concepts, Sooraj R. Barjatya chooses to be regressive. Going against the tide, Barjatya once again dares to bring his old concept of a perfect family drama on the silver screen in his latest presentation ‘Vivah’.As the tagline suggests, the movie’s story is the journey of a young couple from engagement to marriage. Well, Barjatiya’s concept is a little different from others, but not from his previous flicks.The film was declared a blockbuster, after earning Rs 22.22 crore net gross after seven weeks of running. As on 06 March2007 the film has earned Rs 30.91crore in box office earning.By the end of November, it was reported that there had been over 4 million(4,000,000*$9.99=Approx.Rs.18Cr.) online streams of Vivah.Running into its thirty-fifth week, its position still remains in the top 10 at the Indian box office despite its limited release and competition from some of year’s and industry’s most successful movies including Dhoom 2, Bhagam Bhag, Guru (2007 film), Namastey London, all being released after Vivah’s debut.Vivah Grand total stands at large 48.91 crore for a film made at an modest budget of 10 crores.

After the passing away of his wife, wealthy Delhi-based businessman, Harishchandra, took it upon himself to bring up two sons, Sunil and Prem. When they grew up he got Sunil married to Bhavna, and let Prem complete his education, even let him study abroad. Soon Sunil and Bhavna gave birth to a son, Rahul. When Bhagat told him that he had found a suitable match for Prem in Poonam, the niece of Krishnakant, a fruit merchant from Madhupur, Uttar Pradesh, the family traveled there, met with Krishnakant, his wife, Rama, and daughter, Rajni, and instantly approved of Poonam.

Prem and Poonam also approved of each other, the Astrologer was consulted and a marriage was scheduled to take place in six months time. Shortly thereafter the engagement took place. The two families met again in Som Sarovar, Nainital, to let everyone get acquainted, and when Prem got his first contract from Japan, Krishnakant took his family to Delhi to celebrate. With the deadline for the marriage drawing close, both families start their respective preparations - not knowing that fate may have other plans in store for this young couple.
