Road (2002)

By octron • Aug 8th, 2008 • Category: After 2000, Thriller

Rajat Mukherji-directed ‘Road’ is no doubt a fresh and daring attempt to tell a story without resorting to the age-old cliched norms of commercial Hindi cinema. Mukherji’s polished directorial skills and his sense of stylish presentation stand out in almost every frame of the movie. The subject of the movie is different from the oft-repeated tales in Bollywood films. Woven around three central characters, the story of ‘Road’ has all the necessary ingredients – romance, style, thrills and action – to make it a success at the box-office.
In the first half the film focuses on the romance between Vivek and Antara, but post interval the action shifts to Manoj Bajpai.

The film moves to a different plane with the entry of Bajpai, who plays a psycho with twisted eccentricities. Gradually the focus shifts from the romance between the eloping couple to their sinister foreboding of uncertain future with the queer stranger.‘Road’ boasts of excellent performances by its cast ensemble. Vivek Oberoi shows the signs of a versatile actor in-the-making with his sensitive acting while Antara Mali comfortably carries off a leading role with conviction and elan. But the one to walk away with all the plaudits is the multi-faceted Manoj Bajpai who impresses with his subtle acting nuances. Being a theatre artist he gives the right facial expressions and says many things even by keeping quiet. Although the film focuses on these three main characters in both the halves there are also eye-catching cameos by the likes of Makrand Deshpande, Raj Jutsi and Ganesh Yadav. In a nutshell, ‘Road’ is a film that falls in the experimental genre of cinema. Besides being stylish in look, the film has a novel storyline with a nail-biting climax to boot.
