Contract (2008) *LQ*

Cast of unrecognised and low key actors, a story on the underworld and a good amount of action – so much like some films that Ram Gopal Varma made once-upon-a-time. Contract just made us wonder if the director would be back to his former self. He has excelled in this genre of films like Satya and Company. And naturally Contract brings out expectations.

The film is about a guy getting into the underworld to finish it off. Aman (Adhvik Mahajan) has a lovely wife and a daughter but loses all in a blast. Full of anger, he wants to wipe out the underworld.

For this he gets in touch with a police officer Ahmad (Prasad Purandare) who trains him and sets everything up so that he is ‘recruited’ by the underworld gangs. Sure enough, Aman is picked up from jail by RD (Sumeet Nijhawan). Soon this chap becomes the most dreaded shooter in the underworld and he wipes out RD’s rival gang. And then he finally reaches Sultan – the terrorist who says he is god’s own man.

While Aman’s getting into the underworld is not really convincing, Ram Gopal Varma does show some interesting aspects about the underworld. Especially the fact that one gang is supported by the intelligence and the other is linked to the terrorists. Also, the fact statements on Jihad are pretty strong. Probably the ending won’t work as well. And the scenes between Goonga (Upendra Limaye) – the head of the opposite gang - and his wife irritate you to no end. What is the need of forced comedy? There could have been some clever dialogues rather.
