Laaga Chunari Mein Daag - Journey Of A Woman(My Veil is Stained) is a Bollywood film directed the critically acclaimed film Parineeta (2005) and produced by Aditya Chopra. This is Sarkar’s first film with the Yash Raj Films banner. The film stars Jaya Bachchan, Rani Mukerji, Abhishek Bachchan, Konkona Sen Sharma, Kunal Kapoor, Anupam Kher and Hema Malini in special appearance. This fascinating blend of musical, melodrama and feminist fairy tale, “Laaga Chunari Mein Daag” shows Bollywood’s moral universe in transition.
The film follows the fortunes of Badki (Rani Mukherjee) and Chutki (Konkona Sen Sharma), sisters from a genteel Benares family with money problems and predatory relatives. The elder daughter Badki is more conscious of her parents’ old age, their growing anxiety for making both ends meet, and her incapacity as a woman to support her parents as a son would have done. When Badki leaves to find work in Bombay (as everyone in the film still calls the sin city currently known as Mumbai), “Laaga” really takes off. There, Badki — with no diploma and no skills — becomes Natasha: a high-priced prostitute.

The movie isn’t coy about this. “I’ve fallen from grace,” she says. “I can never come back.” Ms. Sharma hits all the right notes as Chutki, the film’s conscience and clown. Through her, “Laaga” rejects tragedy and embraces its musical comedy heart. The Hindi title — literally “a stain on my veil” — means “fallen woman.” But here Badki gets back up, becoming, with her sister, that special thing: the modern Indian woman.

Chutki (Konkana Sen) is one of the finest artists in Indian cinema. She has done full justice to her role as a younger daughter with little understanding of the family crisis and huge dreams for future. Though it is a very well-executed movie, with finesse of Pradeep Sarkar, and all the right ingredients for a commercial hit, it is a very predictable movie. The reason for its predictability is that the previews not only revealed the entire story, but stole all the surprising elements from it.
