Life In A Metro (2006)

With Metro, director Anurag Basu proves for the third time [after Murder and Gangster] that he’s an incredible storyteller. The movie is set out to deliver a realistic and unpretentious look at the lives and emotions of a handful of city dwellers in contemporary Mumbai – but it’s a hopelessly cliched affair that’s hindered still further by some of its wilder artistic flourishes. The presence of Celebrity Big Brother winner Shilpa Shetty has undoubtedly helped Life In A… Metro to attract more attention than it deserves given the lacklustre nature of this ensemble Bollywood drama.

The story by Anurag Kashyap based around a group of characters all living in Mumbai city. The characters include Rahul (Sharman Joshi) who works as a call centre executive whose only dream in life is to make a lot of money.Rahul secretly loves his colleague Neha (Kangna Ranaut). Neha is a smart, educated woman who has come up in life very fast, and this is not only due to hard work, as she is secretly having an affair with her boss Ranjit( Kay Kay Menon) who showers her with gifts and promotions as long as she is willing to sleep with him.

In his 30s, Ranjeet is married to Shikha [Shilpa Shetty] with a 6-year-old daughter. They had decided that she should stay back at home and take care of the house and the kid. Ranjeet ventured out on his quest for money and success… and forgot his family somewhere on the way. And bitterness and boredom crept into their relationship. Soon he found solace and a fresh lease of life in Neha.Neglected by an indifferent husband and bogged down by family chores, Shikha is soon attracted to Akash [Shiny Ahuja], a struggling theatre artist whose wife divorces him because she cannot stand his failures anymore. Akash and Shikha’s love blossoms and she almost crosses her limits.

Amol (Dharmendra) plays a man who returns back to India and his loved one Vaijanti (Nasifa Ali) after 40 years hoping to spend the remaining days of his life with his first true love.Vaijanti lives in an old people’s home and is Shikha’s aunt who is a source of both hope and inspiration for Shikha. Then there is Shruti (Konkona Sen Sharma),Shikha’s sister and Neha’s roommate who works at ‘Radio Mirchi’.In her 30’s Shruti is still a virgin desperately looking for the right man in life to settle down with. She has a picture of her “ideal” man etched inside her head.

She is dreamy eyed about her RJ, Wishy K [Gautam Kapoor]. She also meets Debu(Irrfan Khan) a happy-go-lucky man in his mid 30’s who too is still single and wants to find the ideal wife and get married. through a matrimonial site. She hates him. But Debu doesn’t.A film so simple in its presentation yet to utterly complex in the themes, relationships and emotions it portrays that it makes you smile and shed a tear in equal doses. The closure of the story is reasonable and acceptable to the audience. Most of the characters did justice to their role and never suffered from stardom.
